Due to the major success and enjoyment factor competing in the Bideford Soapbox Derby 2021, Western Lightning Ltd. participated in the 2022 event and helped raise money for ChemoHero.
Given, the experience from the first attempt in 2021, we altered the cart slightly by installing a second set of brakes and stronger BMX tyres. Anotehr major change was a swap of driver with Dave Adams at the wheel and Steve Adams exposed on the back dressed as a bear.
Overall, we were considerably faster than we were with in 2021 with a much improved second run which was joint 3rd fastest. Considering the lack of aerodynamics we were of course exceptionally pleased with that result!
We absolutely loved the whole event with great thanks to the organisers, volunteers, fellow competitors, those that attended and the Western Lightning Ltd. staff who gave up their Sunday to support.
We have already signed up for 2023 and hopefully will have a new cart design/theme....
Western Lightning Ltd. competed in the 2021 Bideford Soapbox Derby which was raising money for Chemohero. Our entry for this event was the Arkansas Chuggabug with Steve Adams driving at Lazy Luke and Dave Adams in charge of stopping as Blubber Bear. We were not the fastest overall however gave it our best for what was a very good cause. We thank everyone involved for a fantastic experience that was well organised. We shall of course be entering in 2022!!
Western Lightning Ltd. Competed in the recent Cornwall Motorfest Soap Box Race, supporting both Cornwall Hospice Care and the charity Guide Dogs for the Blind.
After much hard work and a large number of tubes of expanding foam ‘Lightning the WonderDog’ was completed by Director Steve Adams and driven by operative Robert Cassidy.
The event was a massive success overall for both the Company and The Guide Dogs for the Blind. We managed to raise £170.00 in collection money!
The icing on the cake was winning the ‘Best Soap Box’ award which was judged by Vicki Butler-Henderson from TV’s Fifth Gear. This was apparently due to the urination mechanism that was constructed which was used to attack Vicki.
Although not exactly aero-dynamic, the soap box did better than most other entries and made it all the way to the finish unassisted.
After having a taste of Soap Box racing, we will in no doubt be entering the next available competition in the South West! We would very much appreciate any assistance at future events from our Customers.
Thanks to all Western Lightning staff for helping to support us at the construction, the event and also with transportation of ‘Lightning the WonderDog’. We would also like to thank the Guide Dogs for the Blind for joining us on the day and allowing us to be their sponsor.
